How to deal with requests for referrals from strangers

Have you ever been asked for referrals by someone who is, if you are brutally honest, a stranger to you?  You do not know them or only have a limited knowledge about them. You cannot say how reliable they are, how trustworthy, whether or not they really do come up trumps and add value to someone you might refer them to.  With those circumstances, you are gambling with your own reputation if you refer them.  You have worked hard to develop your reputation. Why take that risk and damage it?


How do we deal with requests from these people for referrals?

How can we make a referral to a visitor to a chapter meeting when we know precious little about that person?
