The plumber whose Dad got more than he bargained for

An interview with Alan Dean, plumber extraordinaire:

1. What do you enjoy most about what you do?

ALAN:I like the variety of the work that my job entails, no one day is the same. I also like the customer gratification at the end of a job. It's very rewarding to create a beautiful bathroom and keep a customers boiler going especially through the winter periods.

2. What advice would you give someone just starting out in your line of business?

ALAN: Anyone starting in this business should join Bni (ha ha)

I would say getting your quotation methods right are very important. You don't want to be over charging but also it's no good under charging as it increases the stress level of a job and it can show in your workmanship. Making sure the customer is 100% happy with the job before and after you leave is critical if you want them to refer you to their friends which is what ultimately increases your network of customers.

3; What one thing would you do with your business if you knew you could not fail?

ALAN:  I would hire more staff and build my business size. At the moment the balance between employees and work load is very hard to maintain. You don't want to turn work down but neither do you want a wage bill you can't pay.

4; What do you see as the coming trends in your sector of business?

ALAN: I think that renewable heat sources are becoming more popular and I will be doing training for this as soon as the local training centre I use has set up the workshops for it

Also they say there's an app for everything so I think having an app for my business is the next step when I can afford to invest in one.

5; Describe the strangest or funniest incident you?ve experienced in your business?

ALAN: One of the funniest things that's happened in my business happened to my dad. He was installing a new combi boiler in a block of flats that housed some African refugees and one of the occupants who we say was ?a bit heavy set? proceeded to remove all of her clothes in front of my shocked father.

6 What ways have you found to be the most effective for promoting your business?

ALAN:  I have found word of mouth is the only way of generating good business. Ads online and in publications are fine but expensive compared to returns and people are very wary of finding a rogue trader when they do not know them.

7. What one sentence would you like people to use in describing the way you do business?

ALAN: Alan is by far the best plumber I've ever used and very reasonably priced.
